Whenever you begin a construction job, it will simplify things to use precise and detailed specifications for garage doors and overhead doors. When you turn to our website, you will definitely find the product you are looking for. While garage doors may have the same dimensions, this doesn’t mean they all use the same hardware. Much of what will be needed depends on the use specifically.

If you will be choosing either a garage door or overhead door system, then there are certain things you need to keep in mind in order to make the right decision.

What Type of Traffic Will the Door Be Subjected To?

You will need to think about risk that could come from use, which may lead to breakdown.

Would Weather Tightness Be a Concern?

Energy loss will be an important factor. Some doors have insulation and weather tightness to make them more efficient. Avoid overly large doors as they have more energy leaks. Additionally, for motorized doors, look into things that could make them more efficient as well.

How Often Will the Door Be Used (Per Day or Per Week)?

Reliability will be important, so depending on how often the door is opened or closed, the proper hardware and garage door openers will be needed.

What Are You Looking for in Safety?

You may wish to consider things like protection from accidents and injuries, but you will also want to consider prevention of vandalism.

How Much Natural Light Do You Want?

Doors with more windows will offer more natural light, but this will also lower thermal resistance factors. Additionally, numerous windows will reduce security. You may wish to choose one small window that is perhaps 533 X 203 mm (21 X 8 in.) if these issues are a concern to you.

Do You Live in a Place with Extreme Conditions?

Some of the things that could damage a garage door include corrosive air, strong winds, risk of explosion, use of bridge cranes, and building a car wash or truck wash. Consider these factors before choosing a door.

After answering these questions, the next thing you will want to do is look into the dimensions of the door you will need for your project.

    1. You needs to know certain things including the distance from floor to ceiling, the first obstruction the garage door or overhead door would encounter, etc. Doors need a certain amount of clearance.

    2. Two doors side by side will need a minimum distance of 457 mm (18 inches).

    3. Doors with accessories like electric door openers will need the assistance of an electrical engineer. The highest possible voltage will be needed for maximum efficiency.

After this, the next thing that must be considered is the type of door needed for the application.

Sectional Doors – These make up for more than 90% of the overhead doors in Canada. They are made from 26 gauge galvanized steel that is 1 ¾-inch (45 mm) thick with injected polyurethane foam. This foam is considered to be the best insulation available since it actually adheres to the walls of the door, increasing rigidity and making the whole system as much as twice as strong as polystyrene insulation.

Rolling Steel Doors – These rolling steel doors are divided into two sections and are used inside a building. They could have a fire resistance rating of more than 45 minutes.

High-Speed Doors – These doors can move at speeds of 152 mm (60 in.) per second and are made from PVC material.

Loading Dock Doors – If you need overhead doors for loading docks, then you have several options including mechanical docks, platform lifts, and hydraulic docks. You will need to look into safety accessories that could be chosen for these doors.

There are so many options for doors, but it doesn’t matter if you need rolling doors, high-speed doors, all-glass doors, pass-doors, sectional garage doors, wicket doors, or a loading dock, we here at Knechtel Door Systems have the experience and qualified installation technicians so that you will know your door has been handled properly.

When you choose your door, make sure you look for components that will provide durability and efficiency as well. This will help you avoid the hassle of breakdowns. It is always more efficient to pay more in the first place than to deal with the cost of repairs. You could possibly double the durability of your door for just a 15% higher price.

Finally, consider our Preventive Maintenance Program (PMP). This provides planned preventive maintenance so that your door will always work properly. This can prevent the need for service as well as costly interruptions.
